Comedian Chris Rock, before announcing the nominations for Best Documentary, made some jokes to the Oscar 2022 audience.

However, things did not go as expected after he joked about Jada Pinkett Smith being in "G.I. Jane 2" (1999), starring Demi Moore.

The joke made reference to Pinkett Smith's alopecia, a condition that causes a person to lose hair; the joke implied that

she looks like Demi Moore, who shaved her head for the 1997 film G.I. Jane. Since 2018, Jada has publicly discussed her struggle with the disease, explaining how

scary it can be and how she came to terms with herself and accepted alopecia. Although the actress has been very open and calm about the issue, she seemed visibly upset by Rock's comments.

Her husband, Will Smith, who was nominated for his performance in King Richard, stood up and

walked over to Rock. The comedian tried to smooth things over by saying it was

just a "good joke" and not a mean one, however Smith promptly slapped Chris Rock in the face.

Viewers were not sure if this was planned or not until the camera cut to Will Smith's face after he sat down and the

audio went silent because of the swear words used. Smith, very seriously, yelled twice to the comedian "keep my wife's name out of your mouth."
