In an interview with the author Ottessa Moshfegh, responsible for "My Year of Rest and Relaxation," Brad Pitt decided

to open up his heart and let off steam about issues such as the mild depression he faced and his treatment for alcoholism.

The actor, 58, reported that he lived with mild depression for years: "I think joy has been a new discovery later in life.

I was always moving with the currents, floating in one direction, then another," he spoke.

"I think I spent years with mild depression, and it wasn't until I made peace with that, trying to accept all parts

of my self - the beautiful and the ugly - that I could understand moments of joy," he added.

In addition, he commented on searching for meaning in life. "Here in California," he says, "there's a lot of this talk of

'being your authentic self.' That plagued me; what does 'authentic' mean? For me it was recognizing those deep scars that we carry."
